CHARACTER INFO.
Character Name: Sunstrider, Kael’thas

Canon: Warcraft : After allying with Illidan and Lady Vashj and travelling to Outland, and after sending the captured Naaru, M’uru, to Silver Moon. Most notably before switching his allegiance to Kil’jaeden. This would put him vaguely right before the events of the Burning Crusade expansion.

Note: A note on canon—Blizzard has decreed that later canons super secede earlier ones. That is, if any events in earlier published works (such as Warcaft III) conflict with later canon (such as In the Shadow of the Sun) the later works are considered true canon. Additionally, Kael’thas' in Heroes of the Storm is not strictly canon (as there are many joke lines, such as one that references the internet); Kael’thas in Heroes of the Storm also appears to be from a later canon point, as his history states that he has allied with the Legion. There is also a rather large personality shift from the Kael’thas in Warcraft III to the Kael’thas seen in the Burning Crusade; since I will be taking him just prior to the start of the Burning Crusade, he hasn’t been driven mad with magic and power just yet. My interpation of Kael'thas is also largely based on the short story in Warcraft: Paragons, Blood of the Highborne.

Character Appearance: Anu belore dela’na.

Character Age: Most likely several hundred years old, though possibly older. Kael’thas’ age is never mentioned in canon, though his father ruled Quel’thalas for 2800 years. Jaina mentions that although Kael’thas appears to be the same age as her (while she was studying in Dalaran so in her mid twenties), that he was quite older than her. Blood elves are long-lived like their Night Elf cousins, with a reported average lifespan of thousands of years old (the Warcraft RPG which states their lives to be 200-300 years old is not considered canon).

Pick A Number: 240, 070

Canon Setting: Note: This canon setting will be written to be Burning Crusade (BC) relevant, that is lands that haven't been brought into the fold yet (such as Pandaria) will not be discussed. Additionally, this canon setting will be a rather general overview, with the addition of a primer into the culture of the Sin'dorei, as Warcraft is an expansive canon.

Warcraft is set on the world of Azeroth, along with the other worlds that interact with it such as Outland and Draenor. Azeroth is a land that is rich in ecosystems (deserts to frozen tundra) and races, ranging from elves ( night elves, blood elves), humans, orcs, draenei (purple skinned horned humanoids), goblins, dwarves, goblins, naga (merfolk), forsaken (undead), tauren ( bull/cow humanoids), trolls, and gnomes to name a few. Magic (fire, ice, arcane) is commonplace in Warcraft, as is the worshipping of nature (druids, shamans), and belief in greater forces (The Light). Technology in Warcraft is of a fantasy nature: there are no present day electronics such as cell phones or computers, but engineers and tinkerers do exist and build cities and inventions, such as worker robots. Civilizations in Warcraft live anywhere from large cities (Stormwind, Origrimmar) to ruins (Zul'Aman), to living within nature itself (Nordassil).

Warcraft is about the interactions and wars between the races, whether they are at war with each other, or at war with a greater evil (the Burning Legion, The Lich King, The Old Gods). Although there are many groups and factions in Warcraft, they are generally divided into two grand factions: The Alliance and The Horde. The Alliance is known for being proud and noble, and driven by honor and tradition; it is said to be ruled by justice, hope, knowledge, and faith. The Horde is a mesh of diverse and powerful races who have largely been ostracized and cast aside, who value strength and action more so than diplomacy and politics, and who fight to survive.

Sin'dorei (Blood Elf) culture is centered on two beliefs: that magic is their birthright, and that they will have vengeance for the fall of their kingdom. Their kingdom is called Qual'thalas (known as the Land of Eternal Spring), capital Silvermoon, and their spoken language is Thalassian. Formerly high elves, the Sin'dorei are a race of elves who "rebirthed" themselves after the invasion of the undead Scourge, taking on the name Blood Elves to symbolize those who were lost. They are a people who on the face of mass extinction, fight on for vengeance.

Magic to the Sin'dorei is an important part of their culture and life, almost as necessary as breathing. Following the founding of Quel'thalas, they created the Sunwell, a fount of magical power that embraced both the elves and the land, nourishing and protecting both. After the invasion of the Scourge however, the Sunwell was tainted and had to be destroyed, leaving the Sin'dorei with an ache in their very being, as they had become addicted to magic.

Outside of magic and vengeance, the Sin'dorei share many typical Elven traits. They are beautiful, graceful, cultured and long-lived. To a degree they are somewhat standoff-ish and xenophobic, used to handling their own affairs without the help of others. They can often be seen as haughty and rather vain, and aesthetics are important to them —their architecture is innate and sprawling, intertwined with red and gold.

Character History: Anar'alah belore

Character Personality:
"Selama ashal'nore"
" Justice for our people.”

Above all else, Kael'thas Sunstrider is defined by his lineage and the burden he bears because of it. He is the leader of his people, leader of the Sin'dorei, and he will do whatever it takes to ensure their survival.

Kael’thas is a man of pride, duty, honor, passion, determination, vengeance, and to some extent, guilt. Kael'thas was notably absent during the fall of Quel'thalas, having been away studying at Dalaran during the Scourge invasion (it is in fact several days before he arrives in Silvermoon). At the time, Kael’thas was not yet prepared to take his father's place as the King of the Quel'dorei, and it shows in his actions going forward (as he would make many choices that others saw as hasty and dangerous, such as destroying the Sunwell without knowing the consequences). Kael’thas remarks in the viewing of his father that:

" I fear I am not ready, Father. You are the King. You will always be the King."

When he says his final goodbyes to his father, all he wishes for is the strength to lead his people, to make his father proud. Likewise, all of his actions after this point can be seen as desperate attempts to hold his broken kingdom together, to attempt to fix what is broken rather than to move forward and heal. His father, Anaesterian, reigned for over 2800 years, and the very thought of seeing his entire kingdom crumble in a few paltry years would be an insurmountable failure. As the ruler of his people, Kael’thas will do anything and everything to ensure their survival.

In the wake of the destruction of the Sunwell, as tribute to his father and those fallen, he renames the Quel'dorei the Sin'dorei, or children of the blood. He also takes up the verdant spheres, which powered Ban'dinoriel (the shield that protected Quel’thalas) both to protect them and a physical reminder as to the sacrifices the Sin'Dorei have made. No longer satisfied with sitting back (and perhaps ashamed for his absence in the fall of Quel’thalas) he becomes a leader who is always on the front lines, and he appoints Lor’themor as reagent in his absence. On a level, his vengeance is quite personal—the leader of the Scourge being Arthas Menethil. Arthas, whom Kael’thas had met several years prior in Dalaran, had not only killed his father and left his land in ruins, but had also stolen the affection of Jaina Proudmoore, whom he was courting. Kael’thas finds his strength to rule in vengeance, and it is an ideal that one day overtakes him entirely.

The curse and the addiction of the Sin'dorei to magic is also very important to his character, as it is a deep seated thirst that eventually permeates all other thoughts. Kael'thas, being a powerful mage, was hit particularly hard by it, and unable to cast spells, he explored any avenue to cure it, even using blood magic as an alternate to true mana.  Kael's desperation in this, to resort to shadow magic (and later with an alliance Illidan) is only the beginning of the lengths he would go, each one being arguably more damaging than the last.

Over the course of Warcraft, Kael’thas is met with increasingly harder and harder situations (from the Sin'dorei's addition to magic, to being imprisoned by the Alliance) yet he never falters. No matter what problem presents itself, Kael’thas always finds a solution, even though they are increasingly desperate and dangerous. A younger Kael’thas might have balked at the idea of allying with the exiled Naga (indeed he hesitates at first), and the betrayer Illidan, but there is little other choice. By aligning himself with Illidan, Kael’thas is quite aware that he is almost literally making a deal with a demon himself-- moreover, he knows the dangers firsthand of dealing with dark magic (having seen Kel'thuzad succumb to it). Yet he takes the plunge anyway, accepting these dangers as a risk he needs to accept. Failure for his people is not an option, and the end justifies the means. Overtime, his thirst for vengeance as well as his increasing exposure to fel magic (through Outland itself and the verdant spheres) begins to wear on him and he becomes more insular (drifting away from Illidan and Lady Vashj, and even his own advisers). Although he is not yet the mad, power hungry, Kael’’thas of the Burning Crusade, he has already begun to walk down that path.

Outside of his role as prince, Kael'thas is also a talented mage: brilliant, curious, passionate and with an insatiable thirst for knowledge. Magic, as opposed to ruling, is a skill he has nurtured his whole life and such he is quite comfortable in situations that involve it. In Rise of the Lich King, it's said that for all of Kael’thas's prestige, he was actually fairly approachable and amiable, despite the typical xenophobia of blood elves. His expressed romantic interest in Jaina is evident of this, despite her being a human and not of proper noble descent.  Still, Kael’thas is undoubtedly royalty, and he can come off as both imposing and cold at times. To be a ruler, Kael’thas knows that his emotions and words should be guarded and composed (and for the most part they are, aside from talks of vengeance and Arthas). Like all blood elves Kael’thas can also come off as arrogant and haughty at times, particularly when it comes to magic. Similarly, he also has an intense amount of pride in his land and people, and views Sin'dorei food and culture above all else. Kael'thas too, has a certain value to aesthetics, as he still manages to look fairly elaborate and put together, even when he was in the plain robes of the Kirin Tor.

In summation, Kael'thas is a character that faced with the threat of destruction (failure) , goes to increasing lengths to stave it off. Arguably each choice he makes after becoming Lord of the Blood Elves is more damning (both for him and his people), and each step takes him further and further down the rabbit hole. But there's no going back, only forward, and him and his people will endure — they have to, for their fallen brothers and sisters.

Character Powers & Skills: Kael’thas is a powerful mage (specifically he meets the requirements to be called both a blood mage and arguably an archmage) and is capable of casting numerous spells. Due to his prowess of arcane magic, he's proficient in all disciplines (barring necromancy as it's forbidden) , but is said to be rather skilled in Abjuration and Enchantment. Rather than list all the spells in the schools (as it would be fairly lengthy), a general overview of the schools will be given. Spells that are iconic to Kael’thas will be described in more length.

Abjuration: school of protective magic, shields, armor, wards.

Conjuration: summoning, largely consisting of water elementals. Also includes summoning the basic food of bread and water. This food is not as filling as food of non-magical origins, but it can do in a pinch; also is limited to one of a few portions (he wouldn't be able to feed more than a few people with it).

Divination: gathering information, scrying. Arguably Kael’thas's weakest school and for purposes in Consignment, he wouldn't try to scry or see the future.

Enchantment: imbuing objects (or people) with magical power; enchantments can be temporary or permanent. Disenchanting, stripping objects of their magical properties, and dispelling magic also falls under this category. Kael’thas's mastery of enchanting is so much so that he is capable of creating magical weapons, which he can manipulate remotely and can fight on their own.

Illusion: art of deceiving reality, such as brief invisibility.

Transmutation: manipulation of time and space. The most iconic spell of this school is polymorph, which transforms the target into a harmless critter (usually a sheep) for several seconds. Teleportation is also included in this school.

Outside of arcane magic, Kael’thas also knows some fel magic. At current this is limited to “mana tap” which gives him the ability to drain magic from inanimate objects (such as crystals and jewelry) and from living beings. This grants him no additional powers or strength, rather it’s used to stave his addiction to magic now that the Sunwell is destroyed.

Specific Powers (spells)

Mana Shield: Shield damage using mana; Kael’thas is quite adept at this spell and it’s said that his version of mana shield was unparalled.

Teleportation: Teleport from one area to another; can also teleport a nearby person. Teleportation requires knowledge of the destination or it can go horribly wrong.

Arcane Torrent: Release a burst of arcane energy that silences any nearby spellcasting for several seconds.

Living bomb: Embeds a living bomb of fire in an enemy that deals damage over time before exploding.

Flamestrike: A powerful fire spell that conjures a pillar of flame that deals heavy damage in an area

Pyroblast: Summons a large powerful fireball that deals massive damage.

Summon Phoenix:
Summon a phoenix as a familiar to assist in battle. Phoenixes are capable of fire magic and be reborn from their ashes. Kael’thas’s phoenix seem to be unique to him, and is named Al’ar.

Gravity Lapse: Ensnares an enemy in a vortex and throws them up into the air.

Additionally, Kael'thas is fairly adept in strategic warfare, leading his people to numerous victories, against all odds.

CHARACTER SAMPLES.
First Person POV: A magic talk at a carnival, with a witch who isn’t a troll.
Across universes, the fate of elves still seems to be dire.

Third Person POV:
Prince Kael’thas Sunstrider stood on an overlook in Tempest Keep, lost in thought. The captured Naaru, M'uru, had been successfully sent to Silvermoon, but it was only a temporary measure. Even in a place such as this, which was brimming with magic and energy, he felt a dull ache in the core of his very being. His body, as with every Sin'dorei, craved the magic of the now destroyed Sunwell, which had nurtured and sustained them for thousands of years. Raw magic and power, no matter how potent it may be, was still only a substitute for what their bodies craved. Still, the energy present in Tempest Keep was substantial, and for the time being, it would have to do.

He felt the presence of another before he heard them, and the aura of their magic saturated the area. He turned, expecting the worst: perhaps a kindred spirit of M'uru, come to avenge the enslaved Naaru, but it was only a single, solitary female elf. An elf with white skin, blue eyes, and in a simple robe of white.

His eyes narrowed, and he spoke a single sentence:

"Anaria shola." Any of his people would know the phrase, Thalassian for speak your business. But he had a suspicion that this elf wasn't who she appeared to be, for her eyes were cereulean, untainted of the corruption of the Sunwell.

The elf smiled, and replied in perfect Thalassian. " Greetings to you, Prince Kael'thas. I am Melasa of the the CDC, and I have a proposition for you."

Kael’thas frowned, the acronym one he had never heard of. It certainly wasn't elvish, demonic, or the bronze dragon flight— it sounded almost human, but that made little sense either.

" If you're wondering where my allegiances lie, it's to no faction in Azeroth, or Outand." Melasa looked upward, to the shattered sky of the Netherstorm. " In fact, it's to no one even remotely close to this plane, not even the Legion."

"Then you make no sense." Forces farther than the Legion and the Twisting Nether were unheard of, and quite frankly preposterous.

" I was a Quel'dorei once. It was long ago before your father was born. I was a tailor." She tugged on the sleeve of her robe, as if tugging on a memory. " I saw the beginnings of the Troll Wars first hand. I lost my husband to the Amani, and I never thought I would see light again.

But I was wrong.

The CDC is strong and infinite. They brought my husband back to me when he was lost, in exchange for my service. They wish to offer you something similar. Something you've lost, that is very dear to you." Melasa held out her palm, a golden orb slowly forming in it.

The energy, however minute was unmistakable. The depth of it's radiance and power could only originate one place, the Sunwell. Every fiber in his being yearned to touch it.

Kael’thas'thas had been convinced that such an agreement, such a ploy, was more dangerous and foolish than a deal with Sargeras himself. But at the appearance of the golden sphere, his soul ached; he forgot about everything else, Lady Vashj and Illidan distant memories.

"My servitude, for the restoration of the Sunwell." He stated the terms, needing them to be true.

"That's right. You, and only you. In return, we shall return the Sunwell to how it used to be. Whole and pure.

"Then I agree."

CHARACTER ITEMS.
Pick a Team: BLUE: Kael’thas is no stranger to leading and commanding in battle, having become the leader of the Sin’dorei (then High Elves) after his father’s death to the Scourge. He not only led his people in rebuilding Silvermoon, but also as a commander in battle against Arthas. Acting as both a sovereign and a tactician, Kael’thas guided his people in both battle and on a diplomatic front, fostering new (albeit shady) alliances for their survival.

GREEN: Although Kael’thas is not necessarily suited for the front line, he is capable of powerful sorcery. His training in the Kirin Tor, along with the power of his verdant spheres make him an adept fighter on the battlefield.

Reason for Joining the CDC:
In short, everything Kael’thas has done is for his people, and this would be no different. He’s no stranger to allying with others to survive, or to get what the Sin’dorei need (even if the means are questionable). Having allied with the Naga and Illidan, allying with the CDC would probably be one of his least shadier/questionable alliances. His people desperately need a new source of power (or even better yet , the restoration of the Sunwell) to survive, and the CDC can provide just that.

As far as a reaction to the world destroying he would have no problem with it, as he’s arguably begun to commit similar sins in Outland.

Mission Freebie: Restoration of the Sunwell to it’s previous, uncorrupted form.

Personal Item or Weapon: His Verdant Spheres.

Character Inventory:

❧ Verdant Spheres: Formerly the three crystals that empowered, Ban'dinoriel, the magical barrier protecting Silvermoon. Despite being overloaded to destroy the Sunwell, they are still capable of empowering fire spells to be more potent.

They are tainted by fel (demonic) magic.

❧ Red and gold robe with accompanying plate armor.

❧ Vial from the Well of Eternity [CONFISCATED]

❧ Felo’melorn ; the whereabouts of Felo’melorn in Warcraft are unclear, as the last place it was seen was in Kael’thas’s possession when he fought Arthas in Northrend. It is an ancient Highborne runeblade and was once wielded by his father, so undoubtedly he would keep it close and on his person. While it’s not in the loot tables for Kael’thas when you defeat him, Felo’melorn was added to the lore AFTER the Burning Crusade expansion (in other words, Felo’melorn was only added to Warcraft lore after Kael’thas was dead, so it could not be in his loot table because it did not “exist” then). [CONFISCATED]
